Origin : Saint Valentine's Day (commonly shortened to Valentine's Day) is an annual holiday held on February 14 celebrating love and affection between intimate companions. The holiday is named after one or more early Christian martyrs named Valentine and was established by Pope Gelasius I in AD 496. It is traditionally a day on which lovers express their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards (known as "valentines"). The holiday first became associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished.

As it can be seen, this has originated as a simple method of expressing love, and having a special day in order to relieve themselves from all the burdens carried by them as lovers. Hence, it was seen as a good practice to celebrate V, since for young lovers, it was a moment of delight and for other couples, it was a moment to remind each other that they are still in love. The exchange of flowers, cards had taken place in a common way.

Present : The dignity of the V day has been fully jeopardized by the commercial effects that has been added to it. It is given a substantial promotion starting from months back. Young minds are captivated in a whirlpool of dreams, dreams that are nothing but mere creations of notorious merchants.

I am not implying that, one should not celebrate valentines day, but then again my mind inquires, why should you? After all, past or present, the visible essence is that you are saying I love U to you intimate partner. Now why don't we do that everyday ? (errrm...I think lovers does that everyday, I'm no expert in the field though...*wink*) Do you really need a specific day to express your feelings to your partner... ?
My idea is that, if every day is a valentines day, most of us will be, saved from a lot of trouble that has to be undergone due to conflicts in relationships. Conflicts do occur, but at the end of the day, you can express your love to your partner, nothing matters more than that aint it.. ?

Well....this blog will be the counterpart of my සිංහල blog. But that doesn't mean this is merely an extension or a translated version of it. This will, indeed have similar pieces as well as different pieces. If you like to work in English, but still interested in reading what I write. I'd say this is your place.
